Mentorship Matters to God

I believe in mentors! The evidence is in my personal life & two of my mentoring groups since 2019: "I am" Mentorship for Teens and I am NEXT College Program for Women. A valid early discovery for me as a teen was, I needed a mentor. Here's the background:

I was a little different; so, I watched two different potential women mentors who were 15 or so years older than me for three years unbeknownst to them. Both had God as a foundation but their professional & maturing personal lives differed. I used to ask them questions regarding spiritual matters or future schools. However, their responses initially didn't help.

Until one day, I had a supernatural experience that I shared intentionally with the one I believed God was highlighting. I heard "choose carefully." Her response honestly is what sealed it. Approximately, a year later I asked her to mentor me (I'm slow to warm 😊). Now over two decades plus later the mentorship has taken on variant forms. She went from one mentee to many. & now the mentored has mentees. The reality put simplistically is I would not be the woman I am spiritually or made the advancements I have professionally without a mentor (thank you Dr. YJB ❤️).

You're probably wondering what she said that sealed it & why the caution to choose carefully...

It wasn't so much about the specifics of her words as opposed to what she saw. It was NOTHING that was visible in that present 90s era. I knew the Lord but had a little turn up in me 😊.

*Mentors have the ability to call those things that be not as though they were. & ultimately teach you to do the same. The display image is from a presentation I helped her to facilitate. She didn't know just a few days prior to her asking for my assistance, I internally voiced the desire to facilitate more. Post this event, a few opportunities for this area have been made available to me & one with an international audience. Mentors are tapped in!

*They identify erroneous cycles and the avenues to change them. It's up to you to walk it out.

Speaking of cycles, delay (stuck) & chains. As the lyrics mention, it is only broken through the power of Jesus Christ. If your mentor isn't Saved, I don't care how much market success or public notoriety they've received, their capability has grave limits. & obstruction, delay, and cycles only respond to one authority. Make sure your mentor has THEE Authority to move your now to next.

I've been having & hearing conversations as well as writing about cycles synonymous with delay...obstruction etc. See the last Overthinking blog HERE. One of the enemies' greatest weapons against us is isolation. I know mentorship matters to God because these relationships are evident throughout scripture. You're not meant to do this life alone. Get you a mentor!

*Mentors may be many. Career, spiritual, wealth, particular to a certain season.

‭Proverbs 11:14 NASB2020‬

[14] Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is victory.

*Mentorship is not a lifetime commitment. Eventually as my dad always quotes, "when the student is ready, the teacher appears." One of my jobs is a full-time professor, when I asked my dean why did they choose me? He didn't start with credentials or a trope. He simply said, "they need to see you. " I knew exactly what he meant. From that point on almost weekly I'm asked by a student or faculty to mentor in some capacity.

*You may not feel qualified to mentor, but you are :)...there is something that you've endured that the next generation needs to hear & see through you. My mentor shared with me in recent years that when I initially asked her to mentor me, she didn't feel like a mentor. But...it's about the Generations!

*Mentors may not always be older than you or significantly exceed you in years. However, they should advance you in the area(s) where you are seeking advancement.

*The mentees (adults especially) should seek after their mentors. If you desire to be mentored, go after it. They have what you want, go get it.

*Mentors are not your spouse, parent, bank, nor qualified to mentor every area of your life. Lift the pressure in all your relationships by creating a community of what you need in this season. Spread your wings.

The CAUTION:

The Father cautioned me before ultimately choosing my mentor. Neither choice was wrong, but my life trajectory would vary contingent on whomever I decided. Why?

*Contrary to popular opinion. MENTORSHIP COSTS. This is too deep & long for one blog. In short, sometimes you may need to pay for the advancement you desire to see. We pay for degrees to take us to another level. Same with the guidance of sanctioned mentors.

*Qualify them. Yes, credentials and spiritually. You need to know what they're pouring and where they are pouring from. It is that deep! Many people have paid heavy costs for being mentored by the wrong ones or those that just weren't ready. Age is not synonymous with maturity. Look for evidence & consistency in the output of their lives.

*The oil flows from the top down. Meaning, natural oil comes from the crushing of olives. Spiritually, you will experience the same or similar crushing as your mentor. The parallels are guaranteed. Choose wisely.

We're not meant to do this life alone. I have a passion for young professionals and our next generation of leaders, especially young women. God has gifted me with the innate ability to see others as He sees them, even if the manifestation of what I'm seeing is in the future.
