THANK YOU community partners for helping with the FIRST annual L.I.T. Camp (Lawyers in Training) for middle & high school students. It truly takes a village to raise a child. This post will be lengthy because I want to be sure to say “thank you” to everyone - - people do not have to be nice. I’ll be sure to share some highlight moments from camp in the coming days.
Transforming Generations Outreach Center (Dr. Yasha Jones Becton), your ministry is evidence of not doing church as usual but beyond the four walls of the church. The added emphasis on education has emphasized its vitality as it has proven to be a source of change, increase & a positive escape for many.
THANK YOU for choosing me to direct L.I.T., it’s an honor to serve. As the Pre-Law Center’s Director, any advantageous opportunity for our students to become conscious & caring legal professionals in the communities they serve - - we leap at the occasion.
The time was fun & full, thank you for choosing Benedict College as your first host site for this program. We look forward to future collaborations.
The LIT Teachers 🔥 were unmatched Dr. Chanda L. Robinson - the nurturer (Character Development), Mrs. Sierra Gary-Timmons - Mrs. Congeniality (Reading/Writing), & Mr. DK Turner - The Favorite (Public Speaking). In speaking with parents & students last night, in just 10 days, the mutual takeaway in three words: you - changed - lives. Thank you! The goal of providing all students access & cross-sectional skills analogous to lawyers but applicable to any field was met. ✅
Camp Counselors (Ms. Young, Nikia, Kyla, & Mr. Steele & Swinton) + Volunteers (Ms. Stewart & Sunshine): your commitment made the days easier & your energy with all students is tremendously appreciated.
In TEN DAYS, the LIT Camp students (46 registered & 30+ daily in person) participated in workshops, mentorship sessions & activities led by 11 attorneys inclusive of two judges and 10 special topic presenters; five field trips, briefed landmark cases; completed group projects for showcase day; learned to problem solve; did phenomenal in their mock trial & closing award ceremony. Also, received daily catered meals (Big shout out to - - Jessie Jackson, Nacole Shaw, & Rodney Wactor). ALL of this for $300.
Statistically, crime & folly increase in the summer when students are out of school. Camps, sports & other recreation are a privilege to some in our current economy. Thank you to the prior sponsors mentioned & new sponsors who made this opportunity open to all who desired to participate (new sponsors: Rodney Wactor, Green Family: Toney Green, Albertina Green, Essence Green, Attorney Harry Daniels, Marc Brown Law Firm, Desmond Rudd).
Parents thank you for allowing your child to participate & L.I.T. Campers we appreciate you making this experience fun & full for all involved. I pray your lives are positively transformed & know you can do anything when God is 1st, love you.
We appreciate every share, the encouragment, all the media coverage (WIS - Deric Rush, WFMV Don Frierson & Cheryl Hinton Harris).
The community really stepped up, partnered & served as a mentor. Thank you!
Dr. Becton, thank you for believing in me & placing the demand on every gift.
Dr. Geter, you’re a true visionary & I appreciate the push.
Benedict College Pre-Law Center’s Research Interns & “Order in the Den Podcast” your work is necessary & novel, thank you. Since taking this role, 83% of our current alumni law students are on full scholarships. We appreciate Roshanda Rhodes & Deborah Kifle speaking on their law school experiences.
